"From Jump Scares to Gore: My Ultimate Horror Picks"
Horror moviesālove them or hate them, there's no denying their ability to get under your skin. Whether it's the spine-chilling suspense, the eerie atmosphere, or the downright terrifying jump scares, the best horror films stick with you long after the credits roll.
I've watched my fair share of creepy, unsettling, and downright disturbing films over the years, and today, I'm sharing some of my favourites.
Scream (1996)
I couldnāt start this list without mentioning my absolute favourite horror film, the first one I ever watched, the one that made me fall in love with the genre. It is the ultimate slasher flick that flipped the horror genre on its head.
When a masked killer known as Ghostface starts terrorizing the small town of Woodsboro, high schooler Sidney Prescott finds herself at the center of the blood-soaked chaos. But this isn't your typical horror movieāScream is self-aware, packed with meta-humor, and loves to poke fun at the "rules" of horror films while still delivering plenty of brutal kills. With a killer opening scene, sharp dialogue, and a whodunit mystery that keeps you guessing, it's no wonder it became an instant classic. Just remember: don't answer the phone, and never say, "I'll be right back!".
Terrifier (2016)
Now Iāve never been a lover of clowns, in fact iāve spent almost 32 years terrified of them (pardon the pun) but for some reason I just cannot get enough of Art the clown. I genuinely donāt feel scared of him at all, he actually holds a special little place in my horror lovers heart.
It is a blood-soaked, no-holds-barred slasher that brings pure nightmare fuel to life. The film follows two unsuspecting women who cross paths with Art the Clownāa silent, sadistic, and downright terrifying killer with a twisted sense of humor. As the night unfolds, Art unleashes absolute carnage, proving that clowns are, in fact, the worst. With its brutal practical effects, relentless gore, and unapologetic brutality, it embraces the grimy, underground horror vibe reminiscent of classic slashers. Art the Clown quickly became one of the most disturbing modern horror icons, cementing the filmās cult status among fans of extreme horror. If you thought Pennywise was bad, just wait until you see what Art has in store.
Paranormal Activity (2007)
I know not a lot of people liked this one but I genuinely loved the first one. I love the paranormal and paranormal films and found this one so interesting, especially the āfound footageā way its shot. I think the rumours it was based on a true story also added to the excitement about it.
It follows a young couple, Katie and Micah, who start experiencing eerie disturbances in their home. Instead of leaving immediately like any sane person would, they set up a camera to document the strange happenings. What starts as subtle knocks and flickering lights escalates into full-blown supernatural terror. The film thrives on its slow-burn tension, making audiences scan every frame for the slightest movement. With its low-budget, DIY aesthetic and genius use of silence, Paranormal Activity turns ordinary household objects into nightmare fuel. If you ever thought you heard a noise in the middle of the night, this movie will convince you that you probably did.
Bride Of Chucky (1998)
Now obviously this is a sequel, however this one is my favourite in the franchise and I donāt know if thatās because of Jennifer Tilly. It may well be but i still think it holds it own as a good horror film.
This film takes the killer doll chaos to a whole new level by adding romanceāwell, a deeply twisted version of it. After the events of Childās Play 3, Chuckyās former flame, Tiffany, resurrects him, thinking theyāll rekindle their murderous love. Things donāt go as planned, and after a series of bloody mishaps, Tiffany finds herself trapped in doll form too. Cue a chaotic road trip where the two demented dolls wreak havoc on anyone unlucky enough to cross their path. This film leans into the campy, self-aware humor of late '90s horror, blending slasher violence with dark comedy. Bride of Chucky is a cult favorite that makes murder look, well⦠disturbingly fun.
Thereās so many other horror/slasher films I absolutely love so Iāll definitely do another post like this in the future.
Stay spooky and watch a good horror every once in a while.
