The franchise that made me fall in love

Alright, let’s talk about a cornerstone of horror cinema—my love for the Scream franchise. It's a series that not only embraces its genre but gleefully reinvents it, reminding us why we fell in love with scary movies in the first place. It was in fact the first horror/slasher film I ever watched and what made me fall in love with the horror genre. 

First, can we give a standing ovation to Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson for kicking it off back in 1996? The beauty of Scream lies in how it fuses a gripping slasher narrative with a wink-and-nod commentary on the horror genre itself. It's like the films are saying, “Hey, we know the rules, and we’re going to have fun breaking them.”

From the very first scene with Drew Barrymore (iconic, by the way), I was hooked. Ghostface doesn’t just hunt victims—he toys with them, turning the simple act of answering the phone into a death sentence. Each movie thrives on suspense, twists, and self-aware humor, which makes rewatching them almost as thrilling as the first time.

I think what sets Scream apart for me is its ability to evolve. By the time you're asking, “What’s your favorite scary movie?” to your friends, you realize the franchise doesn’t just serve scares—it’s a love letter to horror fans. Each sequel offers fresh takes without losing the essence of what makes Scream so special.

The characters? Unforgettable. Sydney Prescott is the ultimate final girl, fighting through a mountain of trauma to keep coming out on top. And who doesn’t love Gale’s tenacity or Dewey’s enduring awkward charm? Ghostface himself is both terrifying and oddly human, with a constantly shifting identity that keeps you on your toes.

And let’s not ignore the meta-factor. The rules of survival in a horror movie? Those in-the-know film references? Chef’s kiss. If you’re a horror nerd, Scream feels like a high-five from the filmmakers.

I’m now thirty years old and of course with that a lot of people around me are getting pregnant and having children but that’s genuinely not something I desire. Book your smears!

 It’s uncomfortable, it’s a little embarrassing and no one enjoys having them done but it could save your life.  I’m in my 30s now and have had around 4/5 smear tests, they never get any easier but having them has raised an issue which we can keep an eye on and could possibly save my life and prevent me from developing cervical cancer.  My first smear was perfectly normal and wasn’t anything to worry about however my following smear showed I had HPV which is one of the biggest reasons behind many developing cancer. I now have yearly appointments with gynaecology to keep an eye on whats going on and to make sure that there’s no progression or cancerous cells. Having HPV doesn’t mean you will definitely develop cancer or cancerous cells, however it increases the risk.
